Description
A Victorian Civil War era lady's bonnet that is created with very thin cane (wooden) ribs. It is not a calash that would collapse, it is called a capeline, a cross between a calahs and a sunbonnet created for summer wear. The very front, first ribbing is double layered while the rest of the bonnet is single. I believe the semi sheer fabric is stiff silk, as I have done the silk test. Completely hand sewn, an addition of ruffles is sewn on the front and at the back. A large matching bow in the back. The neck apron / bavolet seems to be attached to a very thin wire only on the sides ( there is tiny piece sticking out of the fabric inside). The inside back is lined with stiff netting. The ties are not original, although I do believe they are latter period. In overall very good condition, no broken ribs. There is 2 holes in the left front side of the neck apron that are approx the size of a dime (10 cents), on the right side there is a short L shaped slit; and in the back inside on of the wide box pleats of the neck apron there is a 1" slit. Minimal organic marks on the inside. The inner drawstring of the neck apron is in very good intact condition. A superb find!! Please ask questions before bidding or making an offer. This is a very rare find, cane ribbed summer fabric bonnets usually did not survive!! Have a great day!!
