THE ITEM DESCRIPTION:
The comic strip characters Little Orphan Annie & her dog Sandy are depicted here in celluloid on a wind-up toy made in Japan in the early 1930s. The toy is in like new condition in the original box. I believe it is one of the earliest of the comic character celluloid toys as it bears the trade mark CK & the box says that this trade mark was registered in Japan USA & India England. There is an inventory number on the box 719/2038. Compare the trademark & inventory number on the Henry & His Brother double platform. The toys & boxes are identical in design & I believe the 2 toys were among the very earliest celluloid licensed comic character toys produced in Japan.
Orphan Annie is on her own green tin wheeled platform which holds the wind-up mechanism. Annie is 6 1/2” tall including the platform & Sandy is 3 1/2” long from nose to tail. She holds a cord in 1 hand which is connected to the other wheeled platform on which the dog Sandy stands. As Annie's platform rolls forward she pulls Sandy along with her & his head bobs freely. Annie holds in her other hand a long celluloid rod with a sack at the end holding her clothes. In the Harold Gray comic strip which began in 1934 Annie is often depicted as a vagabond cast out from her adopted home & left to wander the countryside where a new story then unfolds. She carries all her worldly possessions in that little sack.
The toy is complete & working & in outstanding condition. Excellent colors. The original cord connecting the 2 toy halves was cut at some point & is now tied together. The mechanism has a built in key. Annie's arms are strung together & the cord holding them is a bit stretched. She would look better with a new elastic cord holding the arms together. Sandy's head is a separate piece & bobs when he moves. The original box is complete & excellent condition. There is some very old tape on 3 corners of the box top. The colorful label is unblemished. The box has all the copyright information & company markings. On Annie's back the celluloid is marked Made in Japan.

Little Orphan Annie was 11 years old when the strip debuted. As was common with many of her contemporaries, she appeared to remain essentially ageless or at least no more than 11 years old. Originally this was attributed to the fact that she was a leap year baby born on Feb. 29th.
