    Description

Marx Brothers THE COCOANUTS Irving Berlin Playbill Arena Stage DC 1988
They ought to declare a ``Cocoanuts alert'' at Arena Stage. Audiences for the Marx brothers revival are bombarded with laughs as though a bunch of monkeys chittering away in tall trees were hurling coconuts at them. And the audiences love it.

    The Cocoanuts
is a musical with music and lyrics by Irving Berlin and a book by George S. Kaufman, with additional text by Morrie Ryskind.
    The Cocoanuts
opened at the Lyric Theatre on December 8, 1925, where it ran 218 performances. Despite the success of the film version, it had never been professionally revived until a reconstructed text was staged at Washington DC's Arena Stage in 1986. Subsequently, it was performed at the American Place Theater in NYC in 1996, where "Always" was restored to the score.
